Guidelines for website footer

The 3 essential parts of a website is the content, the header and the footer. In most cases, designers ignore the footer however it’s an important feature as it displays the legal notice, copyright and a mini repeated area which helps with navigation, recent posts, comments, posts etc.

Some important pointers to remember while creating website footer are mentioned below:


Site map or repeated content:

A good way to create a useful footer is to create a miniature homepage. This will recap the site’s objective and highlight important content or links. A slightly smaller company logo is also advisable. However be choosy about the content you need in the footer. Terms of use and privacy policy should be displayed on the footer. All your legal links and copyright information can also be positioned here.


Contact Information and Form:

For commercial websites, the footer is a good place to have their contact information and forms for their visitors.


Newsletter or Sign up form:

Many customers like to receive regular updates from certain websites which are useful to them. Create a user friendly email sign up form for your users in the footer.


Social Network Tabs:

Social media links like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut etc are very popular nowadays and easy access to them from the footer is a great idea.


Language and Region locater:

A language / region locater is usually placed on the header however a lot of sites these days also have them at the footer.


Payment Methods:

Putting payment options on the footer is a good way to let your customers know the various methods of payment.


Partner site links:

Links to your partner sites is also ideal to place on the footer so that visitors know the affiliations to other websites.
